ABOUT ME
Hello! My name is Sid Simpson, I am a May 2023 graduate of Clemson’s French Language and International Health program. Dreaming of being a doctor since I was a child, I entered college with the goal of becoming a physician, but searching for a major outside of a typical premed’s Biology or Chemistry degree. Through L&IH I found just that. This program has widened my perspective immensely thanks to the melange of health humanities, cultural studies, and hard sciences which characterize this degree.
Over the past four years, my love for healthcare has evolved through the preventative lens. The necessity of solutions to health inequity at both the local and international stages has become a huge part of my drive towards the medical field. I can attribute this commitment to medical equity not only to my public health education, but also to the employment, internship, and volunteer opportunities I have had at Clemson. Working with Aspire to Be Well as a health educator and research intern allowed me to analyze health data for intervention proposals and participate in actual health education implementation in the local student population. Further, I spent time as a French translator helping to implement effective hypertension data collection in the Central Plateau of Haiti. CEDC’s Haitian Community Health Surveillance project has given me an understanding of the fine line between toxic charity and sustainable global health change.
Throughout my EDossier, you will find artifacts symbolizing all of the health and language related work, outreach, and involvement from my time at Clemson University. In the future, utilizing these experiences and embracing empathy, community, and cultural competence as a physician will support my goal of building trusting patient relationships, equitable community change, and ethical medical practice for each individual and health system I provide for.
